Who is behind it?

My name is Elvia Diaz. I am a professional middle-aged woman who has become the head of her household since 2013. I have learned to deal with several emotional scars as a divorcee and a mother of two wonderful girls and my very special boy with ASD. It was not easy for me to admit that I needed help. How could I if I was meant to be the strongest one? Learning to navigate the diagnosis has been a real struggle on my own physical, emotional and spiritual health.  I have had to learn all the lingo and jargon the doctors use, find the financial, medical and therapeutic resources, find the time to work and go to therapies because I was determined to fight for each of my children not realizing that I was losing myself fighting a never-ending battle.

One day, I learned what is now obvious to me:  The commandment is simple, Love thy neighbor AS you love yourself, not more, not less.  In hindsight, I see how, with God’s help,  I have been able to overcome several obstacles and learn to enjoy this beautiful adventure called life. I have also realized that along the struggle there are many hidden blessings. I can now see the COLATERAL BEAUTY as I enjoy myself in my own self-development process with the conviction that no one is EVER alone, and that God walks besides me.

As the mother of a child with a disability, I have a deep, personal understanding of the challenges that families face in navigating the complex systems of care and support. My journey led me to found the Autism TEAZ Association (working Hope for Autism in Zacatecas), which started with just seven members and has grown to a vibrant community of over 300. Through this organization, together with a great team of engaged caring parents, I have gained extensive experience in understanding the needs of families and providing overall service coordination to the community,

While there is now more research, resources and awareness for autism, generally speaking, parents are assumed to me physical,  financial, emotional and spiritually ready to face such a challenge. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and we feel overwhelmed as we need to   find the resilience and emotional strength to embrace this new imposed mission.

Disclaimer

While I am not a mental health specialist, I have learned through experience how to deal with life struggles. This course is focused on learning that self-care is not selfish. It includes some self-development, meditation and spiritual growth strategies based under the premise that ASD children are catalysts of love and that they have a special purpose under God´s plan. We, paretns of ASD children, were chosen to carry out that plan. The spiritual guidance given is based on catholic religious practices. Nonetheless, you do not need to be catholic to take the course. It is highly recommended, however, that you seek a strong belief in a higher power for you to apply the strategies presented and outlined in this course.
